Texas Reading Programs
Texas Bluebonnet Award program (grades 3-6)
The Texas Bluebonnet Award is sponsored jointly by the Children’s Round Table and the Texas Association of School Librarians, both sections of the Texas Library Association. Students read (or hear read) five or more books from the pre-selected list of 20 titles. Each reader votes for his/her favorite book. The votes from each campus are then sent to the Texas Library Association in Austin where they are tabulated. The author whose book receives the most votes statewide is the winner for the year.
Texas Lone Star Reading List (grades 6-8)
The Texas Lone Star Reading List is sponsored by the Young Adult Round Table and the Texas Association of School Librarians. A list of 20 titles is selected by a committee of librarians. This program promotes reading in the middle school. There is no voting and no winner; rather, the program is intended to motivate students to ready by highlighting quality young adult books. Mesquite ISD students who participate and read five books from the list during the year earn a trip to Celebration Station in May.
TAYSHAS* (grades 9-12)
The TAYSHAS* list is an annual list of recommended titles selected by the Young Adult Round Table (YART) and the Young Adult Reading Committee (YARI). Both of these committees are part of the Texas Library Association. Titles submitted for TAYSHAS must have a copyright date within five years of the annual list and should reflect high literary standards for various reading levels. Although no formally organized reading incentive programs have been established, campus librarians are encouraged to implement the annual list in ways most meaningful to their individual campuses. Recommendations for the annual list are received by the YART/TAYSHAS Committee at the TLA annual conference.
Maverick Graphic Novel Reading List (grades 6-12)
The Texas Maverick Graphic Novels Reading List (TMGNRL) is a recommended reading list developed by public and school librarians from the Young Adult Round Table (YART). The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6-12 to explore a variety of current books. The TMGNRL list is intended for recreational reading, not to support a specific curriculum. Due to the diversity of this age range, Texas librarians should purchase titles on this list according to their individual collection policies.
